Disclaimer: This review for Enell sports bras is written by a woman who is a raving fan of Enell bras. She tells everyone she knows about Enell bras and encourages all of her friends to buy Enell bras. One Tough Mother Runner is an EBS – Enell Bra Superfan. You’ve been warned.
So, let’s talk about sports bras.
I’m one of those girls who has been blessed with a Rubenesque figure. And, while that’s all good, it’s not good for exercising. It’s definitely not good for running.
According to my good friend, Wikipeidia, about 50 percent of women report some pain or discomfort in their breasts during exercise. Wow. That’s a lot. But, it’s good to know I’m not alone.
My criteria for a sports bra are purely functional. I gave up on getting a cutesy sports bra. (Sad face).
My absolute number one factor in a sports bra is NO BOUNCE!
I have good reasons for this.
First, it’s uncomfortable. It just hurts – both during exercise and afterwards.
Second, people give you funny looks. The only reasons I want people to stare at me while I’m exercising is because they are 1) amazed at my perfect running form, 2) stunned by my speed (ha! unlikely!), or 3) they think I am so gorgeous they just can’t take their eyes off of me (also unlikely – especially when I’m running!).
Third, if you don’t wear a supportive sports bra during vigorous activity, you can potentially damage your chest ligaments. And finally, unrestrained movement can lead to sagging over time.
Over the years, I’ve had a terrible time finding a good sports bra. I always do a test in the dressing room where I jump up and down to test for the bounce factor. Very few sports bras pass this test. In fact, one time I tried on a sports bra that had the shoulder straps close with velcro. Who in the world thought that would be a good idea? One jump and … well, you can guess what happened.
I resigned myself for many years to wearing two underwire bras together in order to get the support I wanted. Still, it wasn’t ideal. The straps dug into my shoulder, and I sometimes got poked with the wires. Overall, though, I thought it was the best I could do.
Seven years ago, I participated in a 12-week fitness challenge at my gym. During the challenge, my husband bought two Enell bras for me. As soon as I put on the first Enell, I fell in love with it. The material was soft and satiny (something I never thought I could have in a sports bra), and the support was absolutely amazing. Absolutely no bounce. What a miracle!
I also love the wide straps on the Enell bras. Those straps add a lot to the support, and make wearing the bra very comfortable. When I’m wearing my Enell, it is snug. That is intentional in the design to reduce movement.
On days when my back or shoulders are sore, I’ll wear my Enell Sports Bra to help give my back more support (day-to-day wear). The Enell helps my back, and gives me great posture, too!
My Enell bras go through the wash with everything else. I know, I know. I should take care of my delicates and my athletic attire in separate washes, hang dry etc. Sounds great in theory – just doesn’t happen that way in my life. Despite my poor caretaking, I’m pleased to report that my Enell bras from seven years ago are still in excellent condition. Over the years, I’ve bought two more, and recently won one on Enell’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/EnellSportsBras)
When Enell had a booth at our local marathon expo, I was thrilled. At the booth, they had this tall skinny tent that served as a fitting booth. The ambassadors at the booth were very friendly and helpful. When I stopped by later in the day during my volunteer shift at the expo, they told me that every woman who had tried on an Enell bought one on the spot – with the exception of three ladies. Wow! That’s a pretty strong statement as to how much women like Enell when they try it!
Downsides of Enell Sports Bras Are Few
First, when you wear your Enell Sports Bra, you’re not going to be wearing any racer back shirts (unless you want to show the straps of your Enell, and I’m not a fan of that). But hey, I was probably not going to wear any racer back shirts anyway, so that is a non-issue for me personally.
Second, I sometimes wear my Enell Sports Bra for daily wear. When I do this, I have to be careful of the shirt I select to wear over it. Because the straps are wider and come close to the neck, they show through the neckline of many shirts. (Good news! Enell has launched a line of “lite” bras for everyday wear. They have the same design as the sports bra, but lighter materials for day-to-day use.)
Third, at $65 per bra, the Enell Sports Bra may seem a little pricey for some. I’d argue that it is an investment in a piece of athletic equipment. Consider that I have two Enell Sports Bras that I’ve worn for over 7 years (and they’re still going strong!). That’s less than $10 per year per bra. I’d say the Enell Sports Bra is definitely worth the investment!
After reading my review and my self-identification as an EBS – Enell Bras Superfan, it will come as no surprise to you that I highly recommend the Enell bra. It is an excellent quality product, it does what it is supposed to do, and it lasts for a very long time. If you invest in an Enell bra, you won’t regret your decision.

Enell Facebook Contest
While Enell doesn’t give discount codes, they do have frequent contests on their Facebook page where you can win an Enell. For example, here is the link to their Big Resolutions Giveaway where you can win one of their sport or lite bras. When I checked, there were only 139 entries. This one is open until 2/1/13.
While I don’t have an Enell bra to giveaway, I do have an awesome Enell Envirosax Bag to giveaway to a lucky reader. It’s great nylon reusable shopping bag that rolls into a small little package that fits into the palm of your hand!
After I published this post, Enell contacted me to let me know that they want to help me support my readers. They are very generously donating an Enell Sports Bra to the giveaway (in addition to the Enell Envirosax). I am beyond thrilled to be able to offer this outstanding product as a giveaway. Thank you, Enell!
Earlier entries to the Giveaway (when it was for the Envirosax only) will be honored for the full drawing.
And finally, if you have an Enell story to share, or you are also an EBS (Enell Bra Superfan), contact me. I’d love to talk with you and share your story on the blog.
Thank you, Enell, for building a bra that enables me to be an athlete. I’m grateful!
