I’m suffering one of a blogger’s worst fates today: no Internet access! To add to my despair, I’m waiting at my house from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm for the technician to arrive. Trapped!
So, I’m reporting a blog from November for today’s post. Cross your fingers for Internet soon!
Music is incredibly motivating to me when I am running. My playlist “Running Diva” – don’t judge! – contains a very broad set of categories of music on it. From Van Halen to the Pointer Sisters, from the Commodores to Maroon 5, I’ve got a little bit of everything in there. When it comes to my playlist, variety is definitely the spice of life!
A favorite part of my playlist that is sprinkled in during a shuffle are the kid songs that are either favorites of mine from the past, or are favorites of my kids. Those songs make me smile and give me a renewed burst of energy when I hear them.
For example, the Duck Song. This is also called “Got Any Grapes” in our family.
Or, how about a little School House Rock?
And Veggie Tales always perks me up!
The lesson learned from all this silliness? Inspiration to run can come from all kinds of sources. We all have different things that work for us. Find what works for you!

Fun reminder!
My playlist is all over the place too. You gotta pick what makes you move!
Amen, Mary! What are some of the unusual songs on your list?
My running play list starts with Foo Fighters and goes into artists such as No Doubt, Neon Trees, Lady Gaga and Sugarland ending with “Daniel” by Elton John ( great cool down song)
My ipod is a giant mix of Metal, Rock, Swing, Big Bands, Pop, Country, Show Tunes and Blues – even a few old school rap songs. Put that on shuffle and be prepared for a twisted ride! LOL Some artists that surprise people about me are Johny Cash, Kid Rock, Public Enemy – you might also find some MC Hammer and Young MC in there! I am known more for being a metal head – I love a good rock concert!
My running play lists are just named “run1″, “run2″, etc. Not very imaginative but, like you, the songs are all over the place (an “eclectic” collection). There are a lot of 80s tunes in my list – I just move better to the music of my youth, I guess. I don’t have any kids tunes on my iPod (my kiddo is 11 now and wouldn’t be caught dead listening to them & he’d be mortified to catch ME listening to them). But I *do* watch videos of him playing the piano or viola when I’m planking.
I read about your loving to hear music
when you run. I do not listen to music
when I run. I want to be alert. I run on
the road. I want to hear during my run.
I also run facing traffic. Music sounds
good, but is not safe. I have been running
for over 4 years. I am 71 years old.
Thank you so much. Elaine Grace Stewart
Hi Elaine – you make some really good points about safety while running. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I’m amazed that you are 71 and still running. I, too, want to be a runner when I am 71! Wendy
Thought I would write again. My run
starts about 10:30 in the morning. It is
an hour run. I take a water bottle to keep
hydrated, not too full. I jog. Before my
run I eat light, small amount of grapes
for energy. I thought this would be good
advice for beginning runners. The key to
running is persistent training. Elaine Stewart
You are so right, Elaine. I like the idea of grapes before a run. I’m working on quitting Diet Coke, and I found that I didn’t feel like I had as much energy when I ran this morning. I think some grapes are a good choice!
