Warm Up Wisdom

I don't want to

When I get up in the morning to run (my favorite time of day to run), I want to immediately start running and not spend any time on warming up my muscles before the run. I’m quite ridiculous and childish about it. I don’t want to! Wah!

However, I know better than that and I go through a set of warm ups before I take off on any run. If I am running with a group, I like to arrive early so I can do extra stretching before the group stretching.

One of the philosophies I took away from the RRCA Coaching Certification Course I attended was that of injury prevention. As coaches, we want to ensure that we are training our athletes in all of the proper techniques and practices in order to prevent or minimize any running injury that would keep a runner from running. Warming up is an essential part of your run.

Warming up is particularly important for women because women have a broader hip structure than men, and this leads to bio-mechanical issues in a woman’s running form. Additionally, the loss of a woman’s menstrual cycle may lead to osteoporosis, which increases the risk of bone injuries, such as stress fractures.

Here’s a great clip on effective warm-ups prior to a run. I hope you find this informative, and that you warm up before every run!

Don’t forget, too, that warming up includes a light jog when you are about to embark on a fast run.

#DumpDietCoke Update

Dump Diet Coke

One of the strategies I’m using in my efforts to Dump Diet Coke is to have a single “emergency Diet Coke” in my refrigerator. By now, it is fairly flat, but if I start to get a raging headache, it seems like a swig of that bottle helps the headache go away. I’ve warned everyone in the house, “Don’t touch my emergency Diet Coke!”

Well, Little Buddy has come up with his own version of this. As we were driving to the store yesterday, he asked me if I would buy him an “Emergency Chocolate Bar” because he felt like he had a chocolate headache coming on!

  1. I usually don’t warm up before runs, as I
usually strain myself. I jog and that is my
warm-up. It works for me. I walk first.
I then jog. I usually run 4 miles. I am
not too regular; I run when I have time.
I do like to blog my runs.
I hope you have a good run. Elaine Stewart
